ISLE OF WIGHT PARKS AND GARDENS INFORMATION

The IWGT has an inventory of some 350 park and garden sites which has been compiled over the last 25 years. Inventory entries vary from brief notes to detailed descriptions and are updated as we gather new information.

REGISTERED SITES

Nine sites are recognised as being of national importance and are included on the Historic England (formerly English Heritage) Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The sites are: Appuldurcombe, Norris Castle, Northcourt, Nunwell, Osborne, Swainston, Ventnor Botanic Garden, Westover and Woodlands Vale Estate. All are Registered grade II apart from Osborne which is grade II* and Norris Castle which was upgraded from II to grade I in October 2016. Descriptions of these sites, together with boundary maps, can be found on the Historic England website by clicking here (opens in a new window).

LOCAL LIST SITES

A further 30+ sites are included on the Isle of Wight Council’s Local List which recognises their important contribution to local distinctiveness and sense of place. Information on the Local List, and the sites included, can be found on the Council’s website by clicking here  (opens in a new window).
