ISLE OF WIGHT PARKS AND GARDENS INFORMATION
The IWGT has an inventory of some 360 park and garden sites which has been compiled over the last 35 years. Inventory entries vary from brief notes to detailed descriptions and are updated as we gather new information.
REGISTERED SITES
Ten sites are recognised as being of national importance and are included on the Historic England (formerly English Heritage) National Heritage List England. The sites are: Appuldurcombe, Norris Castle, Northcourt, Nunwell, Osborne, Swainston, Ventnor Botanic Garden, Westover and Woodlands Vale Estate. All are Registered grade II apart from Osborne which is grade II* and Norris Castle which was upgraded from II to grade I in October 2016, and East Dene, Bonchurch at grade II added in 2023. LOCAL LIST SITES
A further 30+ sites are included on the Isle of Wight Council’s Local List which recognises their important contribution to local distinctiveness and sense of place. Isle of Wight Parks, Gardens & Other Designed Landscapes Historic Environment Action Plan - March 2015
This document completed and published in March 2015 and funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund via monies from the Down to the Coast East Wight Landscape Partnership provides a framework for identifying, recording and characterising significant designed landscapes, for conserving and enhancing these sites and for promoting public awareness, access and enjoyment.
It has been used to create the sub pages on this part of the website, setting out a broad chronology and categorising the designed landscapes of the island.
